Freedom starts in your mind
Why Freedom Starts in Your Mind – My Thoughts as a Therapist
A few years ago, I was sitting with a group of friends when someone asked:
“What is the highest value in your eyes?”
The answers came quickly: love, honesty, loyalty.
When it was my turn, I said: freedom.
They looked surprised. One friend asked, “But why freedom?”
I answered with a question:
“Is there real love without freedom? Can you truly love someone if you’re dependent, controlled, or afraid to be yourself?
Is there loyalty without freedom? If you stay out of fear or need, is that loyalty — or just survival?
And honesty? Can you be fully honest when you’re not free to speak your truth?”
That conversation stayed with me.
Later as I trained in Schema Therapy I realized how deeply this idea connects to the work I do with clients. Once of my clients who suffered from severe depression told me: you cant imagine how horrible is to be stuck in your own mind’s emotional trap. Where your emotions are killing you and you are not able to do anything. The Worst Kind of Prison
Many of the people I work with — especially expats who left their countries or other people experiencing high-pressure environments — describe the same painful feeling: “I feel stuck in my own mind.”
They have successful careers, beautiful homes and perfect lives on the outside but inside, old patterns keep repeating. Anxious thoughts loop endlessly. The same relationship conflicts show up again and inner voice says “you’re not enough” (no matter how much you achieved).
They feel trapped by their own thoughts, emotions and automatic reactions.
In Schema Therapy those repeating patterns are called schemas — early maladaptive beliefs and emotional coping styles formed in childhood that continue to limit us as adults.
Schema
Jeffrey Young who developed Schema Therapy brought a definition of schema saying schema is a broad, pervasive theme or pattern regarding oneself and one’s relationships with others. It is comprised of memories, emotions, cognitions and bodily sensations. It is developed during childhood or adolescence, elaborated throughout one’s lifetime, and is dysfunctional to a significant degree. In simpler terms: Schemas are deeply ingrained, self-defeating “life traps” or core beliefs about yourself, others and the world that were formed early in life (usually when core emotional needs were not adequately met). They operate like automatic filters that color how you interpret experiences, triggering strong emotional reactions even as an adult.
They create invisible prisons:
• The schema of Defectiveness (“I’m not good enough”)
• The schema of Abandonment (“People will always leave me”)
• The schema of Subjugation (“I must please others or I’ll be rejected”)
These schemas don’t just cause anxiety or low mood. They steal our freedom — the freedom to choose how we think, feel and act in the present moment.
How Schema Therapy Helps Create Inner Freedom
The goal of Schema Therapy is to help you gently understand these old patterns, meet the unmet emotional needs behind them and gradually build a stronger “Healthy Adult” part of yourself.
Through CBT tools we learn to challenge unhelpful thoughts in the moment. Through Schema work we go deeper — healing the root beliefs that keep those thoughts coming back.
The result?
You start to feel more freedom inside your own mind.
You respond to life rather than react from old wounds.
You can love without losing yourself.
You can be loyal without becoming submissive.
You can speak honestly because you’re no longer afraid of rejection.
Symptoms are clearing up and you start to feel better.
Freedom really does start in the mind.
My Hope for You
If you’re reading this and something resonates — whether you’re an expat feeling the weight of relocation, cultural adjustment, high-pressure work or simply tired of the same emotional cycles — know that you are not broken and you are not alone.
Real change is possible.
Inner freedom is possible.
With warmth,
